MEDIA ALERT:
ZONEALARM PROACTIVELY PROTECTS CONSUMERS FROM NEW SOBER.W INTERNET WORM

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – November 23, 2005: Zone Labs ®, a Check Point® company ( Nasdaq : CHKP), announced this morning that subscribers of the company's premium ZoneAlarm 6.0 line of Internet security solutions are proactively protected from the new outbreak of the rapidly propagating Win32.Sober.W worm (also known as Sober.MM and Sober.Y).

Leveraging the power of the Check Point's vanguard SmartDefense Security Service, millions of worldwide users of the award-winning ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, ZoneAlarm Pro, ZoneAlarm AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm Anti- Spyware are automatically defended through a proprietary feature called Automatic Kill Control. Over the weekend, when the worm first began to spread, the SmartDefense security experts immediately added the Sober.W worm variant to the company's custom database and, in real time, deployed a remote “kill” command, effectively disabling the worm's ability to infect a customer's PC before antivirus companies could release a new signature.

The innovative Automatic Kill Control gives the Check Point Smart Defense team the unique ability to update a customer's security policies on the fly, with no user interaction required. With worms like Sober.W racing across the Internet with alarming speed, this feature is a particularly effective tool in blocking viruses and other zero-hour attacks before a consumer can download an antivirus update.

The first variant of the Sober worm surfaced on the Internet over two years ago in October 2003. Unlike most current Internet threats which seek to exploit an infected system for criminal and financial purposes, the new Sober.W worm is reminiscent of early viruses sent as e-mail attachments intended to gain news headlines with mass infection rates.

“Today's threats, such as spyware, Trojans and rootkits, are typically more stealth,” said Laura Yecies , vice president at Check Point and general manager of Zone Labs. “The hackers don't want to be discovered, because the compromised computers have monetary value on the black market. This worm is almost a throwback because it was created for the sake of making noise. But it serves as a wake-up call to consumers who may have grown complacent in recent months and relied on reactive antivirus signatures-based systems to keep their PC's clean. Internet threats abound more than ever, and preventative protection solutions like ZoneAlarm are the only way to ensure peace of mind.”

Over 25 variants of the Sober worm have been identified over the past couple of years. Some previous versions have displayed Neo-Nazi messages, and all have had a unique language feature that recognizes German e-mail addresses and sends those recipients a translated copy. Sober.W is masquerading as an e-mail warning from the CIA, FBI or the German Bundeskriminalamt (BKA). If the attachment is opened, the worm scours a user's hard drive for other e-mail addresses and sends a copy to those individuals.

Zone Labs has rated the worm as a High threat due to its mass infection rates, and urges consumers to only open trusted e-mail attachments and to make sure their antivirus and other security software is completely up-to-date.

Even prior to the SmartDefense update, ZoneAlarm Pro, ZoneAlarm Antivirus, ZoneAlarm Anti Spyware and ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite users all had an additional layer of fortification called the OSFirewall™. Unveiled last July, the OSFirewall's proprietary advanced behavior-based monitoring system recognizes the suspicious actions of Internet worms, and offers users the ability to retain control over any malicious code attempting to install on their PCs.
