Customizing Program Access Permissions
ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall security software collects data about programs that try to access the Internet or a local network, or to gain server privileges, and assigns access permissions to them.
To view the list of these programs:
- In the tab, click for the Application Control category.
The Application Control panel shows the Current Settings and the History.
- Click .
The Application Control Settings window opens and shows the View Programs panel.
You can change permissions for any of the programs on this list, add a program to the list, and remove a program form the list.
To change permissions for a program on the list:
- Select a program on the list.
The information about the highlighted program shows in the Detail area below the list of programs.
- Right-click in the fields and select parameter values as necessary. Refer to the table below for the available parameter values:
Programs
|

NOTE: You cannot change this field.
|
SmartDefense
|
Shows what defines the policy for the program:
- SmartDefense Advisor automatically defines the access policy.
- You define the access policy manually.
NOTE: If you change the value of another field in the row, the SmartDefense field will automatically change its value to .
- SmartDefense Advisor defines the policy. The program is used by the operating system.
NOTE: If you try to change the policy for any of the system programs, you will get a warning "This is the system program, are you sure you want to change it?". Beware, changing system program policies can interfere with normal operation of your computer.

Trust Level
|
Defines the actions that a program has permission to perform.
These are possible Trust Level values:
- The highest level of trust. Programs can perform suspicious actions without seeking permission. No alerts will be displayed.
- Trusted programs can perform suspicious actions without seeking permission, but unknown programs must ask for permission.
- Restricted programs can perform trusted-level actions but cannot perform suspicious actions.
- ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall security software displays a Suspicious Behavior alert and lets you decide whether to allow or to deny access.
- Programs do not get access and cannot run.
- Programs can run without any restrictions, because the ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall security software does not monitor them at all.
NOTE: We do not recommend changing the default value of the Trust Level parameter, because the ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall security software assigns policies to known programs automatically, and the SmartDefense Advisor security team constantly monitors and updates the database of these programs.
